Emergency Medical Technician Course
Course Description
Advanced Emergency Medical Technician. The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician course prepares the AEMT student to provide basic and limited advanced emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients. This course is aligned with the National Education Standards for AEMT as approved by the PA DOH (Pennsylvania Department of Health). Students will learn advanced airway skills, IV therapy, medication administration and pharmacology. The course will include classroom sessions, skill labs and required clinical rotations. Special emphasis will be given to providing advanced care in a third-world environment .
This course has been approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Health as meeting the educational course requirement that an applicant for certification as an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician needs to satisfy to be certified by the Pennsylvania Department of Health as an AEMT.
Course Objectives
The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician course will equip students to:
- Construct a Biblical understanding of Christian ministry to people.
- Develop skills for ministry in missions related health care.
- Demonstrate the professional attributes expected of EMTs.
- Perform the roles and responsibilities of an EMT with regard to personal safety and wellness, as well as the safety of others.
- Perform the duties of an EMT with regard for medical-legal and ethical issues, including functioning under medical direction and within the scope of practice.
- Apply principles of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, life-span development, and management of patients.
- Identify the need for, and perform immediately life-saving interventions to manage a patient’s airway, breathing, and circulation.
- Assess and manage patients of all ages with a variety of complaints, medical conditions and traumatic injuries.
- Apply principles of emergency medical services operations, including considerations in ambulance and air medical transportation, multiple casualty incidents, gaining access to and extricating patients, hazardous materials incidents, and responding to situations involving weapons of mass destruction
Successful Completion of the Course
To receive an Advanced EMT Course Completion Certificate from Penn View, you must:
- Have obtained a score of 80% or above on your final examination.
- Successfully pass all skills examinations and have a class overall percentage of 80%
- Successfully complete 24 hours of ambulance ride-along time with 10 patient contacts.
Students successful in all categories of the program are eligible to sit for the National Registry EMT examination and the PA State Psychomotor exam.
To obtain a Pennsylvania Emergency Medical Technician certification students must:
- Successfully complete the Penn View EMS Institute Emergency Medical Technician course.
- Successfully pass the PA State Psychomotor Examination (practical exam administered by the Seven Mountains EMS Regional Council).
- Successfully pass the National Registry Cognitive Examination (computer-based testing administered at any Pearson Vue Testing Center).
