ED 212 Introduction to Christian Education- 3 credits

A course which deals with the principles underlying Christian education. Topics include: Philosophy of Christian Education, Origins of Christian Education, Methods of Teaching, The Christian Teacher and Educational Institutions of the Christian Church. REQUIRED

 

ED 311 Classroom Observation I- 1 credit

A phase of practical training in Christian education when the student will observe at several different grade levels in Penn View Christian Academy. This will give the student the feel of the classroom in action and the opportunity to observe different types of children and various teaching methods. REQUIRED

 

ED 312 Classroom Observation II- 1 credit

A phase of practical training in Christian education when the student will observe at several different grade levels in area Christian schools. REQUIRED

 

ED 313 Classroom Observation III- 1 credit

A phase of practical training in Christian education when the student will observe at several different grade levels in the area school systems. REQUIRED

 

ED 314 Classroom Observation IV- 1 credit

A continuation of practical training in Christian education when the student will become an aide to a teacher in Penn View Christian Academy in the age group corresponding to his/her major. REQUIRED

 

ED 315 Classroom Observation V- 1 credit

An overview of implementing individualized curriculum. REQUIRED

 

ED 322 Teaching Methods for the Classroom- 3 credits

A study of the presentation of subject matter, curriculum planning, various facets of classroom management, teaching aids and resource materials, and strategies of instruction. REQUIRED

 

ED 331 The Teaching of Bible- 3 credits

A study of creative methods of instruction in Bible content and Christian principle. Attention is given to integrating Bible concepts in every subject as well as methods of personal Bible study. REQUIRED

 

ED 342 The Teaching of Reading- 3 credits

A study of the psychological and physiological aspects of reading and the recognized theories and materials of reading education in the elementary grades. Special emphasis is given to observing gropu and individual reading classes as well as practice in teaching reading. REQUIRED

 

ED 351 The Teaching of Math- 3 credits

A study of the materials and methods used to teach K-12 mathematics. Emphasis is placed on teaching methods, unit and lesson planning, class observation and individualized practice in teaching the subject. REQUIRED

 

ED 352 The Teaching of Language Arts- 3 credits

An examination of the content and goals for teaching oral and written communication in the English language. Includes methods for teaching grammar, handwriting, spelling, oral communication, written composition, literature, and poetry. (Emphasis is placed on observation adn practical application of teaching methods). REQUIRED

 

ED 361 The Teaching of Science- 3 credits

A study of effective methods to teach K-12 science from a biblical worldview with emphasis on various divisions of science and the scope of a Christian science curriculum. Special emphasis is placed on theunderstanding of creation versus evolution as foundational for studying God’s Word. REQUIRED

 

ED 362 The Teaching of Social Studies- 3 credits

A study of effective methods and materials used to teach social studies in the classroom. Particular emphasis is given to observation, practice, and planning units for history, geography, and government with an integration of current events. REQUIRED

 

ED 411 Evaluation Techniques & Lesson Planning- 3 credits

The study of various means of evaluating students’ development, progress and understanding of what is taught. Special emphasis is placed on long-term planning with appropriate assessment. REQUIRED

 

ED 422 Student Teaching- 12 credits

Includes lesson planning, preparation, presentation, and testing under the supervision of an experienced teacher in a real classroom situation. The student will observe the superintending teacher; teach individual subjects, increasing his or her load until all subjects are taught with the superintending teacher as the observer.  This is an extensive project involving a full semester of work. Prerequisites: All methods courses. REQUIRED
